We often joke with our family and friends about how they are mentally ill, or suffer from retardation or being mentally off at some point. As children we made fun of those that had issues learning in school or comprehending how to play games. We never know how that is going to affect a person or what other things that might be a stressor or the last straw that cause a person to go postal as we call it these days.

When some one goes on a rampage and kills people or harms people will think they are mentally ill or sick and chances are that is correct. The life of a person effects them mentally and if they have suffered many hardships in their life or as a child or an adult, then the results could be disastrous. People who have had very traumatic events in their lives can develop eating disorders, destructive patterns, and are usually unable to hold down a job. They can be so depressed that they never leave their homes, and are unable to develop any lasting relationships.

However, sometimes even the most mentally stable people suffer mentally. They could be suffering from a change in their job, marriage, school or from the loss of a loved one. Some signs of problems are mood swings, inability to concentrate, no longer getting enjoyment from something they like to do, or avoid family and friends.

We read about people who can no longer handle their lives and walk away from everything and everyone they know and wonder how they can react that way. It could be because they didn’t realize what was happening and just needed to get away. If you see someone who is normally well-adjusted, positive and happy with life change abruptly, it may be a sign of poor mental health. Offer to help them, you maybe exactly what they need to make a change for the better.
